LIGHT BULB

The first practical electrical lighting relied on incandescent light bulbs. These contain a thin filament of material that heats up, glows and emits light when electricity passes through. To stop the filament catching fire, the bulbs need to be emptied of air, a tricky process back then. In 1880, English scientist Joseph Swan demonstrated his airtight light bulbs (with cotton filaments) by first lighting a building (his home), then an entire street in Newcastle, England. Thomas Edison was also making light bulbs with longer-lasting filaments. In 1883, Edison and Swan formed a company to make electric lighting available for everyone.
